GEORGE WASHINGTON SIGNED LOTTERY TICKET
The Mountain Road Lottery was a project conceived in 1767 by George
Washington, Captain Thomas Bullitt, and others. Captain Bullitt had served with Washington
during the French & Indian War. The idea was to build a road through the Alleghany
Mountains in Virginia and to construct a resort in the area now known as The Homestead,
Hot Springs, Virginia. The lottery failed, in part due to there being numerous other
lotteries at the time, and that the King then banned all lotteries in 1769. However,
Captain Bullitt eventually went ahead with the plan, and the resort became a reality
without the aid of the lottery or George Washington. The lottery tickets which were signed
by George Washington became collector's items. There are about 25 known tickets in various
libraries, etc.
Here's a piece of history, in very nice condition, signed by George Washington himself!

MISCELLANEOUS ARTIFACTS:
| "CHEESEBOX" CANTEENS.
The "Cheesebox" canteens were popular from 1800 to about 1830.
They were constructed of two wooden face plates secured by a tightly wrapped rim of
wood. They usually had three leather sling loops and no spout. For a time,
government regulations called for cheesebox canteens painted with the letters
"US". As they became obsolete, many found their way into state militia
inventories. |

that are not discernable. The owners initials "A C" are scratched onto the
reverse. Complete and solid with all the leather sling holders in place. Circa 1810 -
1820. SOLD!! |
